Thermal overload relays use bimetallic strips to monitor heat accumulation and are perfect for standard, predictable motor loads. Electronic overload relays (like the ABB EF range) use current transformers to sample motor current digitally, offering faster reaction times, phase-failure protection, and a much wider current adjustment range.

Use a 3-pole contactor for standard three-phase motor applications where only the three live phases need to be switched. Choose a 4-pole contactor when your system configuration requires the neutral line to be safely isolated alongside the three phases, which is common in standby generator transfers and specific mains distribution panels.

Type 2 coordination ensures that under short-circuit conditions, the motor starter components (contactor and overload) suffer no damage or risk to personnel, requiring only minor contact inspection before being placed back into service.
